Fibromyalgia information

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder, causing pain all over the body. It affects around 1 in 50 people in the UK and is characterised by widespread pain, disturbed sleep and hyper-sensitivity, as well as a number of other, less common symptoms.

The exact causes of fibromyalgia are still unknown, but there are many triggering events thought to precipitate its onset. A few examples would be an infection (viral or bacterial), an automobile accident or the development of another disorder, such as Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or hypothyroidism.

Whilst it is unlikely that a person would be able to make a compensation claim for Fibromyalgia that occurs spontaneously, if the condition develops as the direct result of your involvement in an accident, such as a car crash, you may be able to claim compensation, as it would be considered an injury. This particular type of fibromyalgia is known as post-traumatic fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia Compensation

Post-traumatic fibromyalgia can be caused by a sudden movement in almost any kind of accident, for example; a trip or fall in a shop, whiplash in a car accident or an injury from heavy lifting at work. In fact, in some work-related accident claims, less strenuous repetitive tasks such as typing have also been known to trigger fibromyalgia.

Due to the nature of the condition, it will usually be some time after the initial accident or injury that a person develops fibromyalgia and it is typically several months before it is diagnosed, often once other illnesses have been ruled out. Medical diagnosis by a specialist doctor is usually required.

Fibromyalgia injury compensation

As part of any fibromyalgia compensation claim, Camps Solicitors will arrange for private medical appointments with a doctor who will be able examine you for fibromyalgia. If necessary we can also arrange for you to see a rheumatologist or a neurologist for specialist treatments and advice.
