Asbestos Compensation Claims

Asbestos is a mineral fibre mined mainly in Russia, China and Canada. Asbestos was used in the past for its insulating and fire resistant qualities and particularly in the ship building industry. Asbestos insulation enabled ships to be kept cooler in the tropics and warmer in the Polar Regions, and the fire resistant qualities of asbestos were also of importance.

Anyone involved in manufacturing or using asbestos in its various forms may suffer from asbestosis, Mesothelioma or other asbestos related diseases. Anyone coming into contact with asbestos fibres is at risk including the families of asbestos workers. Dockworkers involved in importing asbestos in its basic form in sacks were exposed to asbestos, as were power station workers, plumbers and heating engineers. Builders stripping out lagging were also at risk from exposure to asbestos as it was often used as insulation in older buildings.

Asbestosis claims

Asbestosis is the scarring of the lung tissue resulting from the inhalation of asbestos fibres. When the fibres reach the alveoli (tiny sacs in the lungs) they trigger the activation of the immune system in the lungs. The asbestos fibres cannot be broken down by the body’s immune system. There is then a build-up of fibrous material around the fibre causing the lining of the lungs to become inflamed, this reduces lung capacity.

There is no cure for asbestosis and in the most serious cases where lung capacity is severely reduced, sufferers use oxygen therapy for the rest of their lives.

Mesothelioma compensation claims

Most people who develop Mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos fibres whilst at work, although exposure at home, either through coming into contact with the clothes of someone who has been working with asbestos, or through using asbestos based cements, can put people at risk of developing the disease.

Symptoms of the disease may not appear until 20-50 years after the initial exposure to asbestos. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, coughing and pains in the chest caused by an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space. Mesothelioma is almost always fatal, sufferers typically only living 6-12 months after the onset of the disease.
