A Tyneside man who had his hand damaged at work may make an accident claim after the company he works for were fined over the incident.
Gary Burke, from North Shields, was working on a machine at the Formica factory when a belt caught his hand and drew it between two guide rollers.
The incident saw Mr Burke lose his little finger and severely damage two others.
Doctors hope to be able to give him some function in those digits after future operations.
The firm have now been fined £8,000 for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, which may encourage Mr Burke to make a personal injury claim.
After the case, HSE inspector Andrea Robbins lamented that “the incident could have easily been prevented if the company had… ensured that guards were in place to prevent access to dangerous moving parts of the machine.”
