Motorists who are shunted from behind should make sure they see a doctor before making any compensation claims, as they could have suffered a brain injury.
Whilst whiplash is usually associated with spinal and muscle damage, a new study in July’s Brain Injury journal shows that the harm could be much more serious than that.
Researchers found that whiplash injuries could cause anatomical changes to the brain, resulting in herniation which can see the organ dip through an opening in the base of the skull.
After studying 1,200 whiplash victims’ MRI scans, the researchers found that brain injury occurred in nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of cases.
People considering a personal injury claim for whiplash should consider that suffering this kind of injury could result in weakness and brain dysfunction.
