Drivers could be increasing their chances of having to pay out motor accident compensation by transporting drunken passengers.

According to insurance company Swiftcover, three-quarters (76 per cent) of British drivers will play taxi for friends who have had too much to drink and it’s anticipated that more than 750,000 drivers will have accidents as a result of their passengers’ actions.

An additional 650,000 passengers are expected to grapple with the steering wheel or handbrake, potentially creating more situations that require motor accident compensation.

Swiftcover’s Robin Reames remarks that their "research into a previously uninvestigated phenomenon highlights the plight drivers face when driving their drunk friends or relatives home from parties… and how these journeys involve a significantly high risk of accidents."
