Road safety bodies in North Yorkshire are hoping that the filmmaking talents of students from the region will help bring down the amount of road accident compensation claims.
The 95 Alive York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership has launched a scheme called Call the Shots, which will appeal to school, college and university students to create short videos for young people about road safety.
The competition’s winners will feature on the partnership’s YouTube channel, which currently features videos which aim to reduce the number of motorcycle accident claims and injuries.
County councillor Gareth Dodd backs the campaign and hopes that “youngsters take up this challenge because they’re the ones who know what will grab the attention of other young people”.
Last year, the county saw 14 deaths and 117 serious injuries to people between the ages of 16 and 24.
