Motor accident compensation may be sought by the family of a mother who was killed after being involved in a car accident with another vehicle in Greater Manchester.

The incident happened on Hall Lane in Little Lever near Bolton on Friday evening and police believe that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction near Moses Gate country park when the collision occurred, which caused the mother to shoot off the road and hit a tree. The mother suffered serious head injuries in the car crash and died later at the Royal Bolton Hospital, although her young daughter – who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident – escaped with minor injuries.

The other car involved contained four men in their early 20s and the police have confirmed that they have arrested a 20-year-old on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. If convicted, as well as a custodial sentence, he could also face a motor accident compensation claim from the victim’s family, with any damages likely to go towards paying for care for her seven-year-old daughter and her two sons, who are aged eight and five.

The Manchester Evening News reports that the victim’s family describes her as "a much-loved daughter-in-law and sister-in-law. She will be deeply missed and remembered with much affection by all who knew her," whilst her mother calls her as "a very devoted wife and a wonderful mother" to her three children.

Sadly, deaths in road traffic accidents are an all-too-common occurrence, although measures are being taken to reduce their number. The most recent Department for Transport (DfT) road casualty figures show that in 2009, 2,222 people were killed on Britain’s roads, whilst 24,690 were seriously injured and 195,234 suffered less serious injuries. These figures were 12 per cent, five per cent and four per cent lower than 2008, respectively, continuing a longer-term theme.

The figures for rural A roads like Hall Lane are even more compelling and prove to show that generally, these roads are getting safer – the DfT figures show that the amount of deaths on those roads was 793 in 2009, compared to 1,321 in 2003, whilst for all injuries, the figure had gone down from 48,804 to 36,047 over the same period.

If you are involved in a car accident that wasn’t your fault and you suffer an injury as a result, you may be able to obtain motor accident compensation to help make up for the problems caused by the incident.
